Jaipur, Rajasthan – India
Definitely visit Jaipur if you are traveling to India for fun, for sight seeing or for adventure and exploring the country. I will share my experiences of traveling to Jaipur and some of the places to visit in Jaipur and also a few places to visit near Jaipur.
Jaipur is also called the Pink city because all the buildings in the center of the town are painted in pink colour. Jaipur is a historical place and was ruled by the Rajputs in and around 1727 by Raja Jai Singh II, the King of Amber. You can see many forts and palaces in and around Jaipur built by the Rajput Kings. The story about Pink City is that in 1876, the Prince of Wales visited India on a tour. Since the colour pink was symbolic of hospitality, Maharaja Ram Singh of Jaipur painted the entire city pink.
The architecture is very important and very different from the Moghul architecture. I have explained how the designs and paintings are done on the buildings in the Moghul architecture (If you have seen my Agra page). In Rajasthani architecture the technique is completely different. here they use the technique of block printing to paint and design the walls and only natural pigments have been used for this paintings and designs. It’s really interesting because even after 100s of years nothing has changed.
Once in Jaipur you will naturally visit the Amber fort, the City palace, The Jaipur Museum, the jal Mahal & the Hawa mahal. There are tourist desk in every hotel and they have a set list of places where they will take you. These places are historical and definitely worth visiting. However i will tell you about two more interesting places which many tourists miss out due to lack of information.
Chaukidani is an authentic village resort near Jaipur. You must stay in this resort for at least one night if you are in jaipur. It’s made in authentic rajasthani village style and you will experience the roots and culture of rajasthan here. There are also dance shows, camel rides etc. which will make your evening most adventurous.
The Sariska Palace is also near Jaipur city but it’s in the forest area surrounded by the Aravali hills. Constructed as a royal hunting lodge by Maharaja of Alwar it is just near to the Sariska national park. There are jungle safaris conducted by the hotel and if you are luck you can see the tiger also. Now it is a famous heritage hotel of rajasthan. The architecture is a mix of rajasthani and french style. Its spread in a sprawling 120 acres of land with all modern amenities. Here do try the authentic rajasthani dishes there are really awesome.
In Jaipur please definitely visit the Museum. You will learn a lot about the lifestyles of the Rajput Kings and see their dresses, weapons and to know how they lived 300 years back. There you can also see the rich knowledge base they had gathered about science, astrology, medicine, technology etc. It’s really mesmerizing.
Rajasthan’s beautiful Pink City Jaipur, was the home of a dynasty of rulers whose three hill forts and a number of palaces in the city are very important attractions for tourists from all over the world. Jaipur is known as the Pink City because of the pink colour of the stone used in the walled city, Jaipur’s local market which is mostly centered around the Pink City sell embroidered leather shoes, blue pottery, tie and dye scarves and other exotic wares. Jaipur is in the heart of the Thar desert which has shaped its history, lifestyles and architecture.
Jaipur is the first planned city of India and is renowned worldwide for it’s coloured gems both precious and semi precious. So if you are planning to buy gems then visit the Rajasthan government emporium to buy genuine gems at reasonable prices. One more famous thing to buy is the famous quilt from Jaipur which can be folded to the size of a hand towel because it’s so soft. But it’s very warm indeed and very comfortable in the winters. I wander how they make it and what material they are using. There is also a wide range of handicrafts made of wood, metals etc that you can buy from the Rajasthan emporium. But make sure that you go to the genuine place only. The auto drivers there will always tend to take you to the shops from where they get their commissions so just don’t listen to them.
I have stressed on the importance of the architecture. So in the photographs given below you will find the distinct design and nature of the architecture.
Fooding – Definitely try local dishes of Jaipur like “Dal Bati Churma” and the famous “Lal Maans”. These are exceptionally unique and tasty. There are many other local dishes which you will definitely like. Rajasthan has a unique style of cooking which makes the dishes heavenly. Some of the restaurants to try in Jaipur are Jal Mahal Restaurant, Peacock Roof Top restaurant, Suvarna Mahal, Baluchi etc.
