Kyiv – Ukraine

Travel to Ukraine – traveling in Kyiv, Ukraine can be a great experience. It is one of the finest destinations in Europe. There are many finest churches and architectural marvels in this country was was a part of the Soviet Union and got independence in 1991.

Kiev is the capital city of Ukraine, Through which flows the DniPro River and the city is known for its religious architecture, monuments and historical museums. The Kiev Pechersk Lavra is a monastery made in the 11th Century and it is a pilgrimage site surrounded by several gold-domed churches. It’s known for its undergound cemetary lined with the burial chambers of Orthodox monks, and there is a collection of gold objects from ancient Scythian times. Many pilgrims come here daily. Kyiv has many many gold domed churches which are extremely beautiful and eye catching. It’s a city made on the hills and you can fell that when you walk up the streets.

Ukraine has survived the Mongol Empire, WWII, Chernobyl, and the Soviet rule, Kiev is a place worth visiting. As I said earlier also the city is filled with theaters, museums, religious sites, modern buildings and ancient ruins, the city of Kiev is the center of Ukrainian culture. The Monastery of the Caves and Saint Sophia Cathedral are both World Heritage Sites. The Museum of the Great Patriotic War and the massive Motherland Statue provides complete view of the city below.

Kiev is an important industrial, scientific, educational, and cultural centre of the Eastern Europe. It has many many high-tech industries, higher education institutions, and world-famous historical landmarks. The city has a very good infrastructure and highly developed public transport system, including the Kiev Metro.  Kiev is one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe and had experienced many stages of great prominence but was unknown to many. The city also existed in the 5th Century as a commercial centre of Eastern Europe.

I had stayed at the Dni-Pro hotel which is named after the famous Dnipro River in Kyiv. The hotel is in the heart of the city and at a beautiful location. For Kyiv City tour the best option is the Hip-On-Hip-Off double Decker bus service which start in a gap of 40 minutes from the city center near DniPro Hotel. But if you are staying in this hotel then you can see many architectural landmarks near by only at a walking distance. Try the Ukrainian local cuisine and the local Ukrainian Beer here.

In Kyiv there are many art galleries and handicrafts showrooms in the main market. So definitely visit them if you are an collector. It’s a country famous for it’s art. So it’s worth buying souvenirs from Kyiv. Kyiv also has a vibrant nightlife. There are many pubs, dance bars, strip bars etc. The Dni-Pro hotel itself has a stip bar. So spending the evening in Kyiv is fun.

Top sights of Kyiv are St. Sophia’s Cathedral, Kyevo Pecherska larva, Maydan Nezalezhnosti, St. Michael’s golden domes monastry, Skvorechnik, Pinchuk Art Centre, Rodina Mat, Mezhyhirya etc. But the best thing is on the first day take the Hip-On-Hip-Off for city tour and then you can decide which place you want to visit on the following days.

Some of the good restaurants of Kyiv are Spotykach, kanapa, Ostannya Barikada for Ukrainian cuisine & Imbir for vegetarian food. And there are of course many food joints and restaurants for Pizza, Burgers and fast foods.

If you are in Kyiv definitel visit Chernobyl. You can go in the morning and return by evening. The city of Pripyat which was deserted in 1986 following a nuclear disaster is a place worth visiting. It’s still a deserted city today with Zero human population. It’s scarry to be there but can be a lifetime experience.
